Old English was the first European vernacular to have a fully developed literature, and its deliberate mix of Germanic heroic traditions and Latin Christian ones makes for a very distinctive and different literary experience.
We would use Bruce Mitchell and Fred C. Robinson's 'A Guide to Old English' (copies are readily available) as our course text, and might supplement it with S.A.J. Bradly's Everyman's Classics translation of Anglo-Saxon Poetry.
The group meets from 2.30 to 3.30 pm on Wednesday afternoons, fortnightly, on Zoom. Eventually we may hope to meet in one another's houses.
Although we have vacancies, the group has been running for 2+years, and people may find it very difficult if they don’t understand the idea of an inflected language.
