Venue: Banner Cross Methodist Church Hall

Art Group I meets every Wednesday morning at Banner Cross Methodist Church—on Ecclesall Road South, just at the top end of Banner Cross Shops. The bus stops just outside, and there is a car park at the back of the hall on Blair Athol Rd.

Teacher, Linda Allinson, will usually set a theme which usually leaves the group free to explore the topic in their preferred medium. We do also explore techniques for different mediums and often experiment with new and different mediums like wax or gel plates for example

Linda uses a variety of approaches including discussion, demonstrations and exercises to develop skills. We don’t just learn from the teacher though, everyone’s experiences count and the emphasis is very much on learning by doing and also learning through our disasters. In the words of the well known TV artist, there are no such things as mistakes, more like ‘happy accidents’ We also give feedback as a group sometimes; it can sound scary but the group is entirely positive and supportive; giving constructive criticism is a useful thing for everyone as it helps to focus on areas for improvement. The focus is very much on process rather than end product though. At the end of the day it’s enjoyment, creativity, fun and relaxation that rule, if we produce a masterpiece at the same time, all well and good.

Our topics have included encaustic painting, scribble drawings, gel plate printing and portrait painting in the style of the old masters.

The group is an easy and welcoming place for complete beginners and experienced artists alike.
