This club was established in 2024.
The club is run under the auspices of Sheffield u3a. In order to join the club you need to take out membership of Sheffield u3a. The club fees are £50 per year for 20 sessions from September to June (pro rata for members joining part through the year). A free taster session is available for prospective members. At present the club is for social chess and abilities range from beginners to more experienced members. We meet fortnightly on Thursday afternoons, between 2pm and 4 pm, at St Columba’s Church on Manchester Road (the A57), directly opposite the Crosspool Tavern public house, and adjacent to the Tavern Garage. We enjoy quiet, spacious, well-lit room(s) in which to play, with adjacent toilet facilities (female, male and disabled). Access to all of this is on one level. Light refreshments (tea, coffee and biscuits) are provided free of charge at all meetings. Car parking is available on the side of Manchester Road, or on nearby side streets. The nearest regular bus service is the no. 51 (First), which stops by the shops in Crosspool precinct, just around the corner from the Church. There are enough communal chess sets available but members can also bring their own set if preferred. Beginners are most welcome and we will do our utmost to provide free tuition as time allows. Please do not hesitate to contact the coordinator (David Margerison email: dandmmargerison@gmail.com) if you have any further questions.
