The group comprises two sub-groups: Alpha and Neos. Alpha is made up of members who very competent in all aspects of the Classical Greek language; Neos have completed roughly half the GCSE course requirements; they are both competent in reading Greek stories, and in dealing with basic language structures. We all meet fortnightly, having prepared a Greek text which we translate in the respective sub-groups and discuss. Alpha continues to brush up and revise language structures, and Neos members steadily add to their basic language knowledge. Alpha tackles many of the major writers of prose and poetry: Herodotus, Thucydides, Plato, Homer, Sophocles, Euripides, Aristophanes, Demosthenes, Plutarch – and many more. We discuss and agree in the group which topics and writers we shall feature during the year. Neos uses a GCSE textbook course, written by a teacher who has produced many successful students of the language.
