All members of the group are very competent in all aspects of the Latin language. At the beginning of each year, we agree on the topics and texts we will cover over the year. We meet fortnightly, having prepared beforehand a passage of Latin prose or poetry for translation, discussion and comment on the nature of the language used. All the major Latin authors are tackled by us – Cicero, Livy, Caesar, Tacitus, Pliny, Virgil, Ovid, Horace, Catullus – and many others. On-line resources are explored as much as books. We cover a particular grammar point each session, translating both from Latin into English, and vice versa. Our efforts in composing Latin sentences for another usually give rise to a great deal of mirth. In fact, in the view of the members the whole session is great fun!
