Steel City Wanderers is an open group which explores the culture, geography and energy of Sheffield in the form of short, guided walks. The objective of the group is to explore areas of Sheffield and subjects not usually familiar to u3a members. These include; street art, poetry, music, industrial history and the natural and built environment. Walks are usually in the period April – September. Walks are limited to 20 -25 people so early booking is advisable! Popular walks may be repeated.
Steel City Wanderers in 2025
The September Steel City Wanderers walk will be ‘Sheffield Home of Football Walk #1 – The City Centre. This will be lead by Steve Wood who is a local documentary film maker, author and historian. Steve is also a trustee of ‘Sheffield Home of Football’, a international charitable organisation designed to promote awareness in the history of football in the city.
To enjoy the walk, it’s not necessary to be a regular supporter of the game or of a particular club. We aim to explore city centre locations relevant to the history and development of the game in the mid-to-late 19 th century and beyond. The walk will take place on Friday 5 th September with a 10:45am meet for a 11:00am start.
The walk will be somewhere in the region of 90 minutes in duration. There will be at least one ‘rest stop’ along the way. As you may imagine it is necessary to limit the number of people who participate, so we are looking to welcome twenty (maximum) enthusiasts and places will be
allocated on a first-come, first-served’ basis. Please lodge your expression of interest (one per person) by emailing me at: soundsheffield@gmail.com
I will reply by return as to whether I have been able to allocate a place for you. It’s essential that you remember to include your email address in the correspondence. I hold back from sending out exact details of the meeting place and time; the route; other general information, until about a week before the day of the walk.
At the end of the walk, we will adjourn to a nearby pub, where all are welcome to join in an ‘after-walk’ beer and natter, and the chance to clarify anything with Steve.
Due to the imminent onset of less-favourable weather, this will (probably) be the last walk of 2025.
COULD YOU ‘HOST’ A WALK?
We are always on the lookout for new ‘themes’. Do you have knowledge of a subject pertinent to the fabric, structure or culture of Sheffield? Could you share it with us on a walk? Areas we have covered in the past (but would be happy to cover again) include street art, music, local authors and other subjects. I would be happy to take on the administrative and publicity tasks, if you can lead the walk. If you would like to give it a go – please contact me at the email address shown above.
Thank you.
Brian Clark
